This is the typical interface used when editing the clips recorded, with a specific set-up being used throughout to allow smooth and efficient editing, and enable quick development of skills in Final Cut. The typical setup (as shown in the image) goes as follows:

  • All recording 'sessions' to be separate and readily available in the top-left of Final Cut, allowing quick access to cut and edit as needed (using the middle screen).
  • Middle screen to allow playback of fully recorded clip sessions and break it down into clips as needed, using the 'in and out' tool.
  • The right screen showing a preview of how the actual 'final' product looks.
  • The track timeline remains at the bottom, with the music track remaining locked throughout (apart from introduction) to prevent accidental change. Video track(s) to be above with the ability to freely move and edit.

Main Tools Used while Editing

Speed/Slow-Motion

The 'Speed...' tool is used in Final Cut to slow down or speed up specific clips once added to the timeline. We have used this tool as a way of achieving the desired slow-motion effect throughout the video, and also used the tool to allow easier management of clip timing.
'In and Out' Tool

The 'in and out' feature of Final Cut is a vital part of our editing, allowing the clips recorded in a constant flow to be broken up into desired clips and editing freely on the timeline.

The Razor Blade tool was used to quickly cut clips on the timeline, allowing the moving of clips or removal completely when needed.

This is the filming and editing done so far. This rough cut is used to show a work-in-progress and give a brief insight into how the music video will appear and the techniques that will be used. The video also enabled us to experience some of the tools available to us in Final Cut, and gain first-hand knowledge on what beat matching and timing will be like throughout filming and editing. Some of the techniques used are cuts to the beat using audio waveforms, zooming and cutting, beat matching, trimming and a variety of shots (POV, over the shoulder) to create the overall scene.

The rough cut only contains one main scene (the introduction), therefore around 3 more 'main scenes' are required for the filming to be complete. Further editing is also required, including in this scene, to create a smoother visual experience and add more related flare to the overall video (for example, a title).

Animatic

The animatic is our first proof of concept, the way it looks will give us a rough idea of how successful our video should be if it's going to be a success at all. When the animatic is being put together we're testing our idea and the timing within it, giving us an idea of what we should be doing during filming to get the desired result in post production/editing.

Record Label Logo Ideas

Dance Feat Records. The name is abbreviated for spacing and graphological purposes, The smaller it is the simpler it is the name carries a double meaning 'Defeat' and 'Dance Feet' for short we can be known as Defeat Records. The non standard phonetic english spelling actively seeks out to appeal to a younger generation who our music video is primarily aimed at. The graphological features are designed in a frost, ice theme for a tougher impact look it screams out to be taken seriously despite the graffiti style font it's in.

Inspiration taken from this David guetta cover we've already analyzed

Costume shoot

Criminal Outfit 1

The criminal(s) in this video need to follow a a costume of a stereotypical nature, which in this case is dark/black clothes that attempt to mask the identity of the person. This idea needs to be followed as the video relies mainly on a visual prompt to show criminal activity. We will also use this type of outfit as a template for any other criminals that might be needed.

Superhero Outfit 1

The underlining story behind the video we are producing portrays that an ordinary teenager becomes the hero, therefore we need to attempt to show him as a teenager 'mimicking' superhero's he has seen in other media's (ie. Superman). We are going to show this through typical teenage clothes merged with a 'self-adapted' superhero clothing. This idea will be followed through the video, however the outfit will alter depending on shots (Outfit 2).

Recce Shots

We used some recce shots to highlight possible places/locations for shooting, and create a clear picture of how shots will look; with some of the equipment used.

Location of the early classroom scene, which will use a range of shots to simulate a bustling college class with the hero in-between.

The POV/over-the-shoulder shot that will be used in the classroom to highlight drawing(s).

Another over-the-shoulder shot which will be used from within the car to highlight driver distraction and  impending accident.

A location shot of one of the crimes (+1).

A location shot of one of the crimes (+2).

A location shot of one of the crimes (+3).

A location shot of one of the crimes (+4).

A location shot of one of the crimes (+5).

The car being used during one of the crime scenes.

These recce shots have highlighted the direction in which we will follow when filming, and created a clearer picture of the locations and items we will use. This now allows us to delve further into shots we need to use and other important factors such as costumes and lighting.

David Guetta Poster Advert Analysis

A poster advert and cover of the single Little Bad Girl By Artist David Guetta demonstrates the common features of the dance music Image. Most of these features are shown in the colour scheme of the ad.

  •  The neon green aganist the black background immitates the night club  scene where clubbers might doll themselves up with glow in the dark paint
  •  More casually the club itself will be filled with bright flashing colours and heavy beats

  • Bright Lights
  • Space full of people
  • Highly regarded social events
  •

The cover itself doesn't say much about the artist, there isnt a face on the cover or a representation of what to expect. I love this fact because it shows their faith in their high profile reputation.  There isnt a doubt that someone will buy this single whether its good or not, because of their history of popular music.

Dance Music Audience Research & Audience Profile

Alex Goodwin

Age: 21
Location: Manchester (Big city environment)
College/University: Manchester Uni

Bio:

I am a young adult, currently studying media studies at Manchester University; in the heart of Manchester. When I'm not studying, I have a wide range of hobbies and interests that i enjoy doing to pass the time. On an evening I either spend my time hanging with friends or spending time in my personal studio, creating tracks to share on Youtube. On the weekend I spend my time (and money!) on in-fashion clothing in shops such as Topman and River Island, as I take large pride in my appearance! On the night however is when I really liven up, I attend the local clubs and bars that have a pumping atmosphere and loud music.

I listen to a large range of music, however i prefer dance/house music due to it's fast tempo and high energy sound. My favourite artist is Swedish House Mafia, however I also listen to artists such as Avicii and Alice Deejay. I prefer listening/creating music than watching TV, however when I do watch TV i'll watch either Top Gear or a film such as Transformers.

Audience Research

Dance Music is a young genre of music that emerged in the mainstream scene
at the turn of the century. Dance music appeals most to young adults who are
accustom to the night club scene and of those who have an active social life.
Dance music has grown to have narratives displayed through music videos to
develop meanings  as the audiences has evolved to expect more than just a dumb
beat. So to gain a distincive  identity to tsimilar genres such as trance and dance
As Dance Music has become more narrative driven the lyrics have gained a stronger
meaning to keep up with the high demands of the young audience it attract globally.

Interests
Dance music fans usually hve to get out to get the music as it's not usually on the radio.
Which is probably why the nightclub scene is the place to be for dance fans.

Expectations
Audiences have grown to expect the music to be less about the beats and to gain distiction
from House music just as much as trance. I think that dance Artists like Swedish House Mafia
have kept up the trend and ever demanding fans, an example is their video of Save the world
by telling the story using dogs instead of super heroes. It's a new idea and form of entertainers
that keeps fans interested simultaneously.

Status
This genre of music fans are commonly middle class teens/young adults with two things, Money
and Time. Dance music is more than just a genre, it's a social experience. university & College
Students are the most exposed to dance music  and is often used as a way to get away from the
stress of education, to enjoy and celebrate friendship and the end of a hard week.

Hobbies
Dance Music is deeply intertwined with a culture of social gatherings and sharing a great time.
Common hobbies involve large social gatherings such as group shopping, video games for the
men/boys. Ultimately their just like anyone else.

Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D Digipak

The E.N.D is the fifth album by The Black eyed peas that covers hip hop, electro and dance genres.

The Album cover cover looks modern and some-what futuristic screaming out Dance & Electro!
An of and expressionless face, the image is green, glowing  and covered with a grid and does not reveal any personal identity or lively colour scheme.

The font of the Groups name and the album name is computer generated which generally is generally associated with electro and dance music as it's primarily created by technology and has less use of musical instruments. There is a strong link to technology and technology is associated with the modern world, it just goes to show that it's a new genre of music and it's identity is already establishments by the iconography created by previous artists of similar genres. Here's an examples.

Swedish House Mafia

This cover is just exploding with colour, there isn't any literal illustration of dance on the image. That  is done deliberately because the band are already established.
The colour is a representation of the night club scene that this genre of music is usually played, It represents the many colours that a thrown around a club if the cover had another colour added to it, it would kick off somebody's epileptic seizure.

The back of the pak is appropriaately layed out with track listings, barcode and copy right details.
This is the non contigent variable. (It never changes) All CD's are layed out similar on the back no matter what genre they are. Only variables maybe the image on the back to represent the artist in a way they desire to be seen.

Lets not forget the black eyed peas started of  as a pop/hip hop band. (And the album has some pop songs in it) The image on the left challenges the usual voyeurism of pop covers of the male gaze, often featuring a half naked woman. It challenges those firmly established conventions of hip hop. Fergie is just as dressed as all the members of the group and the colours are reggae painting style, this is to promote their image in a unique style as brand or product.
The whole record company has created the digipak with iconography in mine, this shows in the relationship of the fonts, text size and matching colours of the whole digipak. The small print is what they want you to read after having bought the product, the large bold font is used as a way of catching your eye. They work together to create an established image, so that people can recognize the album instantly without having to read any of the text. In some ways this makes the text more accessible as it's easier to find than if the fonts on the cover were different.
